This has now been implemented in the WIP-version-7 branch. However, it's not finished. There are a few things I'm stuck on:
Should changing the speed of a video also change its duration? If you think this should be the case, you can uncomment the following line:
// TODO : Uncomment this if we want the duration to change when the speed changes// durationInFrames: newDuration,
The issue with this is that it can cause timeline items to overlap with others. I think we need a smarter "find next available position" function that can also shift the following elements. Still a work in progress.

On from this I fixed the overlapping issue so have gone with speed changing duration.
